One of the most popular residents of the Tanker Jetty is Sammy the sea lion aka Fat Furry Seal. He and entourage can be found sunning on the shore near the jetty or frolicking in the waters waiting for a kind fisherman or woman to throw them a fish or two.
Sammy Friendly Campaign
So beloved is Sammy, during the 2013 waterfront and Tanker Jetty upgrade , contractors wore “Sammy Friendly” stickers on their hard hats. This was to reassure the public that the best care was being made not to disrupt their most famous resident. The “Sammy Friendly” stickers also appeared on site vehicles, trucks and the fence that surrounded the building site. The Waterfront project manager said that Sammy was often seen supervising the workers.
Sammy the Seal statue
Sammy even has a statue dedicated to himself. It can be found next to Tanker Jetty. The statue was created by local artist Chris Siemer. The statue doubles as a money box for the continued preservation of the jetty.
Spoiler Alert – There isn’t just one “Sammy the seal” , there are several seals that rotate the honour.
